Heartland Brothers

Founded in 2015, Heartland Brothers' mission is to share with the rest of the world, the fruits of labor, of Small American Family Farms, dedicated to raising a unique breed of pig. Berkshire.

We work with our exclusive network of small family farm cooperatives in the Heartland of America.

Currently our efforts are concentrated on the vast Chinese market, where pig consumption is close to 700 Million pigs per year.

Berkshire is a heritage breed of pig, which was discovered over 300 years ago in Berkshire, in Reading County, U.K.

It is regarded by many as the "Kobe Beef" of Pork.

Founded in Shanghai Spring 2017, the team at Smoke KCQ was doing what we know best. Bringing people together with good food. That food, of course, is barbeque. Barbeque is primal, meat over fire. It’s the one style of cooking every culture around the world has. Everyone has their own style and preference of meat, but the idea is the same. Bring people together with fireand food.

Many will ask, "what is KCQ?" I love this question as it opens the door to more than 100 years of BBQ history in my hometown of Kansas City. What makes Kansas City BBQ so different than all other American style BBQ? To understand you must know a little history.

Barbeque culture in the US spread from the Carolinas who are known for their whole hog roasting usually rubbed with spices and dressed with a vinegar base. Many don’t even consider Beef as BBQ. Tennessee area continued in the hog tradition and is now famous for their ribs that might be a dry rub or wet depending on where they are being served up. Texas, who prides itself on being one of the biggest states in the union, loves their large hunks of beef brisket dry rubbed with heavy amounts of black pepper to form a thick black bark. You might be criticized for even thinking about putting BBQ sauce on your meat in some Texas pits.

Moving into the Midwest you will find our neighbors to the Eastside of the state in St. Louis Missouri, who have even managed to trademark a BBQ technique of slicing of the breastbone offtheir spare ribs which everyone now knows as St. Louis style ribs. This journey through what’s known as the "BBQ Triangle"offers a beautiful rich barbeque culture that, in my opinion,reaches it’s pinnacle when you come to Kansas City.

Kansas City is in the Heart of America. One of the largest citiesin the most central part of America that finds itself influenced by every region in the US. It was a city built on the meat packing industry and at one time more than 70% of the population worked long hours to put more than 50% of Americans meat on their tables. All of this translates into our love for BBQ. One thing that sets us apart from the rest, there are no limits and there are no rules. We don’t confine our love of BBQ to one style of sauce, rub, or meat. Kansas City barbecue is characterized by its use of a wide variety of meats: pork, beef, chicken, turkey, lamb, sausage, and sometimes even fish. This is why our motto at Smoke KCQ is "Kansa City Style, World inspired." We aim to please a diverse variety of pallets and preference.

Shanghai is the most amazing city, rich in food culture from nearly every part of the world. At Smoke KCQ we do, Kansas City style BBQ, but strive to embrace that energy and to push ourselves to bring great food that keeps with Kansas City BBQ tradition. Our goal is to continue to grow and be inspired by the rich culture and diversity that Shanghai has to offer. When we teamed up with Heartland Brothers, we knew we could bring authentic Kansas City BBQ tradition to the Shanghai masses, serving up quality American Berkshire Pork from the Midwest, raised not far from my hometown. It’s been a humbling experience being able to bring a piece of home to all the wonderful people of Shanghai. We look forward to continuing this tradition of using smoke and fire, working long hours to bring you some of the best low and slow BBQ Shanghai has to offer.
